Default Domain Traders

There is now a major problem in my book with so many people choosing to buy up domains just with the intention to sell them on. It means that we often have to pay more for a doamin we want and they are now becoming very rare.

What are your opinions.

I haven't really thought about this before but I think you have made a good point. It make it hard to get certain domain names that might normally be low cost and are now more expensive because somneone has purchased them with the sole purpose of reselling for more money

You can't blame people for speculatining on domains when there is money to be made. I do find it annoying when the domain I want is already taken and not being used - especially if the price is silly money, but I usually just find another domain instead.

They anger me also, but then I think to myself, "That's their hustle. I sell designs, they sell domains." It's just their way of putting bread on the table.

I have heard this argument before. I personally think it's ridiculous. It's the same concept as buying and selling realestate. It's a very simple business practice, buying something at a low and selling it at a high.

Sure, it's annoying when the domain you'd like to purchase has been taken, but it happens. You've just got to learn do deal with it, one way or another.

The people I feel sorry for are bricks and mortar stores that want to get on the web, but can't get the same domain as their shop name, because it (and all sensible variations) are already taken.

Its easier for online only people - they don't have a brand until they have a site, so they can just keep looking until they find the right available domain for them.

I think too many people are trying to sell, not enough people are buying right now.

I'm in the domain business.

Seems to me like a legitimate business. It's obviously irritating when you need a domain but it's taken (happens almost everytime I'm looking to buy one), but there are so many possible variations that it's never been a problem.
I hear the .eu domains aare being opened to the public tomorrow - it'll be interesting to see how many domains are purchased. It's going to be a god**** race to get the best ones!

I think alot of the domain squatting is stopping because they are not making money anymore unless they can somehow make people believe they are worth a lot.

The ones that get me are when people go for a .net or a common name but with a hyphen in it. All that does is make you think that you have a good domain because it sounds like what you wanted, but in reality your advertising gives a good bit of traffic to the person who has the full name with no hyphen or the .com version.

My personal story is that I lost a domain that fell through the cracks. I thought I had transferred it and I did not, and it got lost and taken. The people wanted $299 minimum for it which was totally unreasonable, and I did not have to have it. I put it on backorder and got it a few months later for $9.95!
