I've read a few (and helped people write a few too

) and I have to agree that with the rare exception, they are not worth the money. I, too, prefer reading printed pages. Any ebook on a general topic like how to build a website is usually just the same old stuff reworded or organized differently. You might find one idea you haven't seen before, but it's usually not worth the expense, even if the ebook is cheap. Plus, you'll likely get emails from the company until the end of time, even if you ask them not to send any.
If you want to try some out, try the ones with a return guarantee, read it and then return it (and hope they are honest enough to return your money) if it is of no use to you. I think if you look at a few, you'll soon see that most are just regurgitating the same old stuff. Just my two cents worth.
