Consider whether you actually need one first, don't get one just for the sake of having one. Does your forum merit enough posts per day that you can't handle the flow and moderation of them yourself, if yes, get one, if it's within a limit you can handle, don't.

When looking for a moderator, don't go looking to find a moderator, from the way you posed your question it seems you want to go to some service or another forum to recruit for your own.

Look in-house, does any member show maturity and dedication to your forum? Helping out others, posting quality posts rather than quantity. Are they active daily, do other members get along with them? These are the type of people you should be looking at to becoming a moderator.

You can usually find them in the "show usergroups" section, but I can't see that bit.

Think there is a section in the Announcements section with a list of current staff.

As you can see I am wildly off topic with my post above, please ignore it..

In terms of actually finding a mod, its got to be somebody you can trust, somebody that has been around the community for a while and somebody who you can empower decisions with.

If they fit those categories then there good to go imo..

I think it's more a general question st@rsky, not this particular forum...

Yes, its more a general quesiton. How did you find moderators and how did you find free moderators as well... what was your offer to them... where did you find them...

The way I do things is first say to myself: do I need a moderator? If not, I don't add one just for the hell of it. I think look at the current userbase and see who has been here for a while, been helpful to other members, contributed to the forum, etc., and then I approach that person over AIM or MSN. I ask them if they think they'll have time to be a moderator and whether they would like that responsibility or not. That's basically how I do things.

I don't offer anything. Most places don't. People join and contribute to forums for the love of it.

And the special icons

Almost all the forums I can think of have a volunteer moderator team. Like Spencer said, only invoke a moderator if it's needed. You don't want 2/3 of all the posts made by the staff!
