Articles in directories are good but you need to be on quality and name sites as well. One of my sites just was in Forbes for example. You need the prestige.

Well at the moment I use Social Networking wesbites like Digg, Stumble Upon and some others. This site give some good tarffic to your site but you have to submit your story in this site. Once you promote it you will get some extra tarffic without spendig money.
If you want some more tarffic and you have no Adsense than you can also go with some Autosurf progarms which allowed 100 to 10000 Free visits. So you can get atleast 10% good tarffic for your website without spending money.
You can also use directories which you found on many webmaster blogs and forums.
