Until about two weeks ago, I purchase all dedicated servers, but I'm now currently migrating our network over to colocated machines. If you buy in bulk you can seriously save money by colocating. We just purchased a bunch of really high quality dual Xeon Dell servers and we're in the process of getting them set up. I'm really looking forward to owning our own hardware.

Hosting Business is now increasing like forums, Kids and Teens(No Offense) have now started developing their hosting business without proper knowledge of knowing how much time they have to give, how much investment they had to in marketing and how to handle different issues.

I'm a teen as well and I planned to start a hosting business but just was offered by my dad to invest in other websites and domains because its a job of adults. I really have a selected choice and I contact the administrator of a hosting business before hosting with them.

My currenct host is www.comforthost.net and I have a reseller from them but Only for myself.

Regards,
Muhammad Haris

Why do you need hosting knowledge if you're just reselling off a reseller account? All you need to be able to do is add accounts and report problems your clients have to who you're reselling off.

I was on the personal plan from http://www.trippedhosting.com/hosting_sub.php but this week I switched to a reseller as I liked the idea of having a different logins for each account.

I got a bargain deal from someone off talkfreelance, $5 a month, London Docklands, 1gb space 10gb bandwidth.

Is there anyway for me to get the specs without asking my host?

For the simple fact you will know what to tell your customers without having to relay the question to your host. If your customers ask you a question, and you have basic knowledge then you can answer them straightaway while if you have to ask your host then your customer has to wait for thier reply and in turn wait for yours, not good.

You will also need to know how to do billing and keep track of support issues, everything like that and much more you need to know to have a chance with a successful business and by thinking all you need is a reseller account is the main reason why most hosts fail.

Well in a way, with the reference of "kids and teens" starting hosting, somewhat I take that as a SLIGHT insult. I was 14-15 when I started a host, I had every basic knowledge you could think of and managed to hire my own team of people to do support and pay them. I gave up on it though (I didn't without offering a new place by working with a couple of hosts I was friends with to get my current clients a new place to stay.) As well, I followed up and paid off the support team with a bonus inscentive of $50 each (you have to think, I was 3 months into the business.)

I didn't have no money in the end for myself... but it was a good experience and taught me a stronger force of management. The domain was sold to somebody else (which the domain you can find now is at livewirehost.com) --- Anyway, in general, its all about HOW you approach, not the KNOWLEDGE you need.

But yeah, I am going to lease me a nice big server (200-400GB space with a good datacenter in case I want to add other features to the server.) In my honest opinion, its kind of expensive... have to think, datacenter charges, server management, control panel, software... etc. In the end, its all good though.

Since reading this thread I have just got my latest server from SoftLayer... still waiting for it to be setup though because they have a backlog and I added extra ram.

I have all my other servers with ev1, and have used them for years. I decided to give softlayer a go since if they are any good I can save a fortune by moving everything over to them.

Very nice people there, and fantastic prices. Where it is still relatively small they still have that personal touch.

Was a bit frustrated to see I just missed a special offer on the 1GB ram upgrade, also that they havent got instant setup. But that is only minor issues.

- Dual Xeon - 3.0GHz Processor
- 2 x 2MB Cache
- 2GB ECC DDRII 400 RAM
- 2000GB Public Bandwidth
- Unlimited Private Network Bandwidth
- 5 IP Addresses
- also upgraded the public port to 100mb

Shame they dont have dual opteron servers yet.

We have some new members as well so it shouldn't be a duplicate thread.

Here is my private server:
Pentium D 820 - 2.8GHz Processor
• 2 x 1MB Cache
• 1GB ECC DDRII 400 RAM
• 2000GB Public Bandwidth

I hired Rack911.com to do the server hardening and site setup.

Where are your sites hosted? Do you have your own server(s)?
I lease several servers, but I'm in the process of building a new Platypus/Plesk powered system.

My new hardware (appluad whilst I boast):
Server 1 - DNS/Web Server
Dual Core P4 (64bit)
Windows 2k3 64bit
512mb of Memory
Server 2 - DNS/Backup Server
Dual Core P4 (64bit)
Windows 2k3 64bit
1gb of Memory
6 250gb Sata Drives (RAID5)
Server 3 - Billing/SQL System Server (Platypus)
Dual Core P4 (64bit)
Windows 2k3 64bit
1gb of Memory
2 72gb Scsi Drives (RAID0)
Server 4 - Linux Web/mySQL Server
Dual Core P4 (64bit)
Windows 2k3 64bit
1gb of Memory
Server 5 - Plesk Expand Server
Dual Core P4 (64bit)
Windows 2k3 64bit
512mb of Memory
Server 6 - Mail Server (ModusMail)
Dual Core P4 (64bit)
Windows 2k3 64bit
1gb of Memory
8x Scsi Drive Array (RAID5)

Each server has a 80gb Sata boot drive, rackmounted, and the network itself has 5mbps of bandwidth (on a 10mbps link), plus a ton of toys, KVM over IP, Master Switch, and Cisco 2948. What is even better is that it's literally 50 feet away from my office.

It's my pride and joy, instead of going out and buying a new car I decided to dump some money back into my business and build up my "network" to how it should be. I've spent a great deal of time on it so I can't help but show it off.

I'll have to post some pictures next week..

I concure. I own a hosting company, work for one basically (well an ISP..), and have learned a few knocks....

The hosting market has been clowned up, oversold, trashed, and screwed up about any which way. It's hard to even get into it any more.

Hey Max, how long did it take for your server to be setup. I am getting pissed off with Softlayer already and I havent even got the server yet.

They claim quick setup on their site, then after payment called to say 3-5 days so I thought ok I can live with that. However it is now the 8th day and they cant even give me a straight answer about how long, just that I am high in the queue and then within another 48 hours.

Perhaps I am just impatient and spoilt by ev1s instant setup.

Update: finally got the server 10 days after placing the order. They have now said that because they stated a 3-5 day delay I have to pay for 5 of the 10 days I was without a server.
