Default Working from home and kids

I saw this brought up under another post somewhere. Does anyone work at home and still have small children at home? Soon I will be having my baby and I know it is likely to start some new challenges with my business.

I don't, but I have friends that do (well did, the kids are older now). They found that once the kid got old enough to crawl and speak they got in the way a lot. It took until they were about 4 to understand 'Daddy is working now, he will play / watch TV / whatever with you later'.

If your spouse is understanding then you shouldn't have too much trouble though.

I don't kids yet (only 21), but I think that it's probably best for you to work out of the house when you have small children if you can. That way you can monitor them and run your business at the same time. I agree with Anne that I'd guess that they might get in the way a bit, but you need to make sacrifices when you have small children and I think the advantages of being near them would outweigh the disadvantages of them getting in the way.

My fiance will watch the baby a good deal when he is home from work so that I can get my work done. I think it will work out rather well but not perfectly of course.

Not me, but I can imagine it would be tough.
Especially if your partner is out at work, you would be at home everyday with the kid.

When they are babies, they cry all the time. When they are toddlers I could imagine them crawling under your desk and distracting you.

I dont know how you guys manage.

I do have a child and work at home. When he was an infant it would have been a lot tougher, but he's 4 years old now. As long as I spend some good quality time with him early in the day, he's fine to play by himself for chunks of time throughout the day and will play quietly with me while I work. I also work while he's napping and after he goes to bed at night.

Well, my kids are grown but my toddler grandson spends a lot of time with me. Now working right after your baby is born, from home would depend on how you feel and how demanding your little infant might be. Working would have to be set-up around her/his schedule. Now when my grandson is with me, I usually get up early before he wakes and work until he rises, and then I work a little more while he naps. And naturally a bit in the evening after his father returns from work. This works out pretty well for me...I hope this helps...good luck...S

Congrats on the baby Kris. I work at home but I have teenagers so they are in school all day and I can work in peace.
