Which is a better and the correct procedure in marketing a website: to submit it to search engines or to just allow google/yahoo to crawl and discover on it?

Submitting your site manually is the best way to get your site into search engines. Your site may not even get spiders that crawl over it so you should be certain that you have a listing on the major search engines, you need to submit the site yourself, or use a trusted search engine submitter.

Actually submitting manually is the worst way to get your site listed. The best way is to get a link to your site "discovered" by the search engines.

This can be done by placing your link in an article you submit, placing your link in a comment on a high PR blog, or get a friend to place a link to your site on their already listed site.

I have learned that it is best to get inbound links. However, I believe it is not also bad to submit to search engines even though I have also learned from another boss that it should not be done that way. Why do you think it is the worst thing to do to submit it to search engines?

I've read an article that says once you acquired your domain, you should submit it immediately with search engines. There are many ways to market website but it is the first time that I've read that it's the worst thing to manually submit sites to search engines. I also want to know the reason why.

From my overall research I have learned that it is probably best to be have a good site with great content and some helpful links so that the search engines find you.
