Has anyone tried sites like these to promote their websites? I don't want to do anything to negatively effect my site, but I would like to increase traffic.

No, I have not checked their services. I agreee Kelkat that yes it is important not to be having any negative impact on our business. It will be interesting to know how people are offering free submission sites.

In my experience, free links on non-targeted sites (i.e. directories) won't help traffic much, but they will help your pagerank (which will eventually increase traffic through search engines - but it's a long term strategy).
