This is like the question of the century.

All in all there are two ways to get traffic flowing.

1) PPC. Pay per visitor from Google, Yahoo! and many other places.

2) Optimize your site.

The long term benefits of optimization are huge. Becoming stable in the SERPs is your goal. You get there from inbound linking, proper optimization of your site, and constant updating.

There is a lot to do to get traffic to your site. My opinion is that you should use PPC only as a jump start device. Read up on optimization, or hire someone if you can afford it.

Good luck!

To increase traffic to your site, you need to add compelling content and make sure it's being found in the right places. While that might sound simple, I assure you it's not.

Agreed with ezine marketing. I do this quite often myself. Search engines love blogs too. Try out blogger.com or wordpress.com. They're both relatively simple to use.

You can also try out squidoo, hubpages, goarticles, articlecity, wikihow, USFreeads... the list goes on. Basically any high PR site that you can openly post keyword rich content and/or articles on, is going to serve you well to drive relevant traffic to your site.

I suggest looking into some of these options.

Here are some ways to improve your traffic:

Free methods:
Submission to SE's and directories
Article marketing
Email campaign (opt-in)
Classified ad posting
Forums, blogs and board postings
Social Bookmarking
Etc. etc.

Premium ways: (Should require a budget)
Pay-Per-Click (PPC)
Targeted Link backs
Professional SEO services
Ad spaces
Offline campaigns
Etc. etc.

Random and unique traffic is good to any site but getting targeted traffic is what makes the difference. This kind of traffic yields the highest conversion which would determine your site's success.

Given a budget, I would always opt for PPC. PPC is a very effective way of getting targeted traffic given the proper treatment. Identify your niche and select the market you want to cater to and start from there. Research also on the keywords your desired market would most likely be looking for. IMO, one should be more focused on getting targeted traffic than just page views. Buying targeted backlinks are also effective at getting targeted traffic - submission to high PR directories also falls under this.

Another great way of targeting your desired audience is through forum posting on similar niche with your link on your signature. What I like about forum posting is that it is totally free.

Your content will always be a factor to be considered. Getting traffic is just the initial phase, making the conversion from your traffic will depend on how well you match your visitors' needs

Hope that helps
