That's right. Don't pay to optimize your sites - you're much better off providing quality content, and working on search engine listings and crosslinks.

Do you seriously have to post every day? And won't the search engines see my stuff even if I'm not on any of the optimizers?

The site we maintain that updates the most often still only updates once a week. I'm not sure that "daily" is really necessary, though I'm sure it doesn't hurt!

Okay, but how do I generate hits? Other than the optimizers?

I was under the impression that writing articles that are "keyword" rich would move them to the top of the search engines.

The whole keywords thing is a sticky process

First, for each keyword there is a profitability level...pretty much supply and demand. Some keywords have a REALLY high supply and low demand, which equals you not getting high into the results

Others have low supply and high demand, kind of like secret keywords that take research to find, and these are what get you into the search engines quicker and higher

Also alot of people have the impression that a keyword-focused page means they will bombard the page with that keyword. However, you should only put the keyword in the page probably about once every 150 words or so (maybe twice if it would sound weird without it).....somewhere in that range

Edit - I'm just waiting for my site to be older which should help it's page rank and rank for some of my keywords. It's only been up for a little over 3 months now, but i'm up to around 40 visitors/day with $0 advertising budget (all SE and forum traffic, but 95% SE)

I can't imagine adding content every day. If I did that one some of my sites, I would end up with simply massive sites very quickly. If you have a blog or a forum attached to the site, it is good to add new things though. And you should not have a completely stagnant site, but I don't think adding content every day is necessary.

It is good to have your site name with a key word in it; something that reflects what your business represents.

50 to 60% and upward of my sales, sign ups, etc come
by way of the search engines.

It's really not difficult. Nor do you need to read a bunch
of search engine optimization stuff.

Keep in mind the following :

- Lots of solid content on your website
- Index page is most important
- Link every page of your website to your index page and each other
(using 'includes' is a good idea)
- Always use meta tags even if people tell you there is no point
- Use a free meta tag analyzer and insert keywords/keyword pharses one at a time
- Place your important content (keywords) in the very first paragraph and in the very last paragraph
- Whatever you are promoting, create a page for it, and make sure the link is on your index page
- Never give up your domain name if it's a decent dot com
- Make sure it is a dot com
- Changing your website design makes no difference
- Change things around on your website or add some new content or a new link, about once a month or more if necessary
- Don't concern yourself with link exchange unless it's a site that has commonality with yours and is quality content
- The longer your site is online, the better
