Default Animated favicon?

I just noticed this on the site BugMeNot.com, they have an animated favicon:

Has this been around forever, or is it something new? I can't say I have any reason to implement, but it definitely caught my eye.

I've never seen an animated favicon before. That's quite cool.

That's pretty cool. I don't think i'd use it though, it would be too flashy / somewhat distracting.

I hadn't noticed that - I have Bug Me Not in my favourites in Firefox and it doesn't rotate (I don't think, I'm not at home now to check).

I think that icon is OK, and not too distracting, but I'm having nightmares about l33t kiddies making irritating flashing icons now...

It's something that was brought in on Firefox 1.5

Does it only work in FireFox?

It is a Firefox only feature - and if you try to use an animated one in Internet Explorer, it won't work and default back to the normal HTML logo.
