Default Business Card Design

How important do you think it is to have a good design on your business card? (I'll post some snaps of my business cards later today.) I think it all depends on the type of business you are. For instance, we're a gaming software company, so we have slightly flashier cards than if we were an IT company. What are your thoughts about business card design?

I they should match the type of company for example:

as I design company I have a modern style, in colour with arial font.

Solicitors and accountants usually have very plain cards with a serif font.

DJs often have sparkly plastic cards.

The most important thing which many people forget, is to include a line of text or a few bullet points about what you do. People receive thousands of business cards every year and wont usually remember simply by you or your companies name (unless your company is like, "ace taxi's")

I went for the matching approach in regards to colour and simplicity. I think that if someone sees your business card and decides to visit your website, they sort of have an image of what to expect. In this case surprise isn't too much of an important factor due to the potential clients possibly venturing into a whole new aspect of business or the internet. As familiar as possible in this case is the best (in my opinion).

Business cards are very strong for marketing, networking and brand awareness. It puts a small, pocket sized and distribution enabling physical front to your business in the public eye and in the grasp of potential customers.

I think designing business cards are just like designing websites. Not only design to what your clients want but design to something easy on the eyes and tastefully. If you're a design company put your all into it but not too much you don't want to overload the card with graphics and make the text miniscule and unseen.
I go for simple things sometimes i try for stand outish styles but i've always preffered simple with some open space to write extra info just in case a client needs it

I'm currently designing my own business card, i'm trying to keep it clean but also add that professional trendy look that i feel my portfolio site has. I definitely think you won't get far with those print and rip cards you can buy from any stationary store.

I'm planning on getting a business card designed very soon as well. My problem is incorporating all the different strange things I do.

You raise a good point ed:

The way I see it, a business card is a tangible front-end for your business, which people can carry around in their pockets, wallets or just place on their desk for future reference. If you could think of a single word or phrase to encapsulate your full range of skills, services and expertise you could let a website do the talking.

I agree with what has been said about a business card should reflect your business, if you are in a creative industry your business card should be bold and for want of a better word creative, where as if you in a more conservative business your business card should follow suit.
