The color-scheme is very important. It can be what attracts people to your site. But you do have to be careful and make sure that it does not distort the text in any way.

I have visited few sites with text and background color is such that it is very difficult to read the contents. It is very important to choose correct color scheme so that it gives reading pleasure.

All good points. People should also take into account if the colors match the theme of the site. I once came across a site about financial investing that was done in soft pink with a lot of roses. It was not particularly geared toward women... except for the graphics. It didn't fit.

Something else important is to keep the right colors in mind. If there are too many colors mixed together, it'sa total turnoff to most users.

I think that a good rule of thumb would be to keep the colors to 3-4 complementary colors, for most sites. Occasionally the site theme would be such to allow contrasting colors to be appropriate, but for most sites, high contrast isn't a good idea.

Well, its the classic color wheel thing. Three adjoining colors look good as do ones across from eachother, etc. I usually go for 2 main colors and an accent color for emphasis.

I agree Jag. One of the things that bothers me about some sites is that the **** isn’t contrasty enough. Gray on black or dark gray..just doesn’t cut it. You’ve got aging baby boomers out there who are visually compromised. If they can’t read it, they don’t stay.

I totally agree SeeMe...I like deep dark contrasting colors with some pastels or equally strong colors for a website. The color of a site will also define the mood of people when they leave.

I forgot to mention what I meant by mood. For example, I did my website in blues..light, medium and dark blues and greens. People who visited the site all had the same reaction..they found it peaceful, tranquil and pleasing. Medium blues calm the mind and then make it receptive to the information so that they remember it better. My next website design revision will have a white background, just for a change.

If possible, dont use pure white as background too because it can be a bit jaring to the eyes.
