You get what you pay for though - if they dont charge alot chances are the quality will suffer (not always though).

I prefer to do it myself and call in a pro if I need a tricky graphic or something made.

I think designs really make a big difference, but I would because I'm a web designer. However, I think it goes without saying that people will judge your website a lot on how it works, so it's important to have something that looks nice.

Not necessarily.

It's a definite plus, and will put you ahead of the competition but there plenty of sites that do great without having a good design.

http://www.worldwidebrands.com/wwb/ - the net's leading drop shipper directory (I've even bought their product).

Voila.

I'd say it is more about usability design than flashy graphics. If a website is easy to use but doesn't look fantastic you can get away with it.

Thats arguable, depending what the site is for.
If its simply an informational site, then yes it doesnt really matter.

But what if its a professional, business site? Or an Ecommerce site?

People dont want to see a bdaly designed site, they expect professional quality. If it's not, then that reflects badly on your business.

Yes, I think it is very important to have a good web design. I think that a lot of people underestimate how important a web design is for your web site. It really is what makes the website.
