Default Do you have a computer science degree?

I wanted to know if the people who are doing web design have degrees. I started out in school as a computer science major but I didn't complete my degree. Do you have a degree in designing or CS? If not, how did you get into designing?

As far as I know from the forums that I have joined, some of the designers don't have any degree in computer science/programming because most of them just learned it from experience or had a self study and lots of practice in the actual hands on. People in the net hire designers based on their output, not necessarily based on whether or not they have diplomas.

I will also say what feline has commented is correct. I would further say that unlike the offline world here degree is not the deciding factor. Here it is quality of work that matters most alongwith few other criteria.

No, I do not have a degree. I learned by doing. I started by viewing the source of pages I liked, and progressed to purchasing how-to books for advanced HTML, PHP & MySQL, CGI/perl, etc. I'm still not as knowledgable as I'd like to be, but I have learned a LOT, and have made web sites for a large variety of individuals and businesses.

I find most web designers are mostly self taught. I learned through video, myself

Many web designers dont have a computer science degree. Basically when ppl are hiring webdesign, more focus will be put on the portfolio. What you can do is more important that what you have.

Every designer I know have learned on their own. Those with degrees usually stick to more complex programming.

I do have a bachelor's and a master's in computer engineering. However, I think I learned most of my web design from personal experience, rather than from my classes. I use what I learned in my degrees for other things, such a statistical analysis and data modeling and segmentation.

As for me, I just couldn't get myself to learn on my own so I have to study short term courses like what I am doing now. Perhaps I am just not patient enough to take the time to understand these tutorials. If ever I do, I like the interactive tutorials which I couldn't find much in the net.
