Default Foundations of a good logo?

I want a logo done for a site of mine, I've contacted a few designers from places like sitepoint, but the problem is, I don't have a clue what I want the logo to look like.

I know I want it to look good on T-Shirts/Bags, be re-sizeable so that it can go on buttons, banners and as a header at the top of the site, and I know I want two colours, max.

Beyond that, I don't have a clue.

Because I don't know what I want, designers don't really know what to give me.

So where do you guys go to get creative ideas? How do you go from being the irritating indecisive customer to the person saying 'Draw this please'?

I tihnk designers work best if they are given sufficient freedom to express themselves, but they still need a couple of pointers. Seeing as logos tend to try and depict the service you're offering, usually designers will be able to work without any indications on your part.

Colour would be a good starting point, would give them something to work from. A bit of background knowledge on your company / website would also be helpful, maybe if you told us the site we could help you?

anne, If you have your website made and you can show them a preview then its their job to select the colors and etc otherwise if you dont have the website and you want the logo first then tell them these points.

1.Your preferred colors.
2.Format/Extension [Preferred Illustrator] Resizeable.
3.Print Media Applicable or not.
4.DPI [300 DPI is the best for shirts/print media and everything but they are heavy].
5.What is your website about.
6.Do you need a mascot or not[ More money you need for that].

These are the few points in my mind and then its all depend on the designer and you.

At anytime before I make anykind of design, like a logo for example I think a preview of other logos is a good idea. Also like others have said giving some colors you prefer is also a good idea. Good luck and hope this helps!

Thanks for the thoughts. I know the size, and the desired usage, and that I want two colours, just not which two colours One will probably be a shade of grey, just not sure about the other.

I've been brainstorming with some silly Logo creator software, so might end up with something workable eventually.

What do you guys think of grey and red?

It really depends on what the site is all about, but I find that #CC1100 and #CCCCCC go pretty well together.

Thanks for the referalls, I'll take a look.

The logo is for a gaming related site, but the goal is to have a network of sites (all related to games / geek culture) and keep a similar theme and style across them all.

I guess you can start out with a background image. And creatively embed your name in there. There are endless possibilities. I have a few friends that are really good at these things. Let me know if you're interested.
