I guess there is a difference between simple yet elegant, and simple and merely functional. I am not saying that I don't appreciate a creative website, just one that uses some restraint. I think using every new tool that's out there on the same page can be tempting, because you want to try something new. You just have to be careful about overwhelming the users of the site - especially if it's knowledge based or e-commerce.

You have to have a content balance. The fastest loading images are flashpix. Also by installing images in the the background of tables slashes download time. This won't work with flash pix yet.
