Thanks so much for the explanations. I've heard so many talking about CMS. I'm in the process of building a rather massive website right now and was wondering if it would help.

Quite frankly, I'd rather do everything myself - just code each page by hand.

Most of the time, it is a mixture of both for me. Meaning I use a CMS and do some customization here and there to make the looks to be different from generic CMS. I find that using CMS do save a lots of time and headaches too!

After building my sites with CMS, I would re-visit the site and tune a little bit here and there as I find ideas and intergrate into it. I think it is a continuous activities even if you make it from scratch.

It SHOULD be a continuous activity no matter what. People (and search engines) like updated content, right?

I'm all about a CMS. It's so much easier to maintain your website and edit it from anywhere when you have a custom CMS. It just makes a world of difference for a website with dynamic content (i.e. content that is always changing). I would suggest to anyone to spend the money for a custom CMS, because in the end it is worth it.

CMS is easier to do updates. Although your website will tend to look generic along with all the other sites that use CMS.

If you have a custom built site, use Dreamweaver... it makes updating your custom site as easy as using a CMS.

The only CMS I've ever used is wordpress (for blogs).
I was never the best at coding a template to integrate with a CMS. usually the templates offered by the CMS doesn't appeal to me so I would go for make from scatch
