Paint.NET - Free Photo Editing Software for Windows

Anyone try it yet? I haven't used GIMP that much so I'm not sure how it compares, but it's pretty feature-filled considering it's a freebie. You can work with layers, there's a fair amount of effects, and it's pretty fast. What are your thoughts?

Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows XP or 2000. Paint.NET is jointly developed at Washington State University with additional help from Microsoft, and is meant to be a free replacement for the MS Paint software. The program offers a clean and easy to understand interface that includes all common editing tools, as well as clone stamp and various image effects. More advanced users will also appreciate the fact that Paint.NET supports layers with transparency and layer adjustments. Additional features include Red-Eye removal, image resizing, sharpening, multi-level Undo and more.

I guess your answer can be found in this review, I haven't used this myself, but I downloaded it and found out it was almost the same as Microsoft paint. It didn't deserve any of my time after that

"Seems to be a much more capable "paint" application than a photo manipulation, adjustment, or retouching tool. Photo tools are rudimentary and incomplete. Paint utilizing standard tools found in many applications. Not a bad program, but not spectacular either."

Jaggiegill, thanks for telling us more about Paint.net. I was attracted to view this thread because Paint.net seems new to me but familiar at the same time. Now that you have explained that it is actually MS Paint with improvements, and it is for Windows ... that's a lot that I have learned today.... Thanks

. I love this program. It has "many" functions and it doesnt cost anything. I had test it and it works fine for me ;-). Microsoft PAINT is nothing against this. Unfortunately there are people who are able to draw a Mona Lisa with Paint Mona Lisa Painting in Paint

Yeah, I wouldn't say it's just another Microsoft Paint. It does have a fair deal of other options, worth checking out if you don't have photoshop or painter.
