Default What about music

Well, it depends. On most business sites I would suggest not. But let's say you have a realtor by the ocean who rents out homes for summer vacations. They have music that sounds like the ocean is lapping at the foot of your desk. I think music is appropriate in this venue, but I would definitely have it "off" as people log onto your site and give them an option to turn it on. Don't forget many people are surfing in their office environment and don't want the boss to find out. If your music is loud or on as people log onto your site and can't find a quick way to turn it off, they will leave your site faster .

I totally agree with having music optional. I went to one site where their "theme song" played automatically, and what's more, LOOPED indefinitely! It got annoying really fast.

it really depends on what your site is trying to sell. as franke1 told, its a good option to add some music on sites which are selling holiday packages. its a strict no for the sites dealing with customer support

I've come across some sites where they have a midi playing in the background and I have to hunt everywhere to find the stop button because they'll seem to hide it somewhere on the page. Also some websites have sound effects, I don't mind them as much as long as its not that loud, but it can be annoying too.

I think... if a website is to have music, it should be contained in a flash animation where it can prompt the user to select music or silence, maybe even add volume control.

I think it's best not to have music at all because it limits the number of visitors who have the same taste of music as you.

I do not like to much audio when I visit a website. There are a few rare occasions when I have found that having music or something at a site has been used effectively, however.

Don't commercial sites have to have ASCAP licensing to play music? I thought that was a big deal a couple of years ago with fines being levied against webmasters for using music without purchasing licenses.

Cool Re: What about music

Now I love music, but if I am involved and diligently working online, I find it annoying. As a matter of fact, if you are viewing numerous sites through-out the day, even the one's that have audio to promote a product becomes aggravating after a while. I think the viewer should be allowed to choose whether or not he wants to hear a verbal message or listen to music..
