How did you choose you domain name for your website? Did you choose a name that reflects your audience and uses keywords that will bring your website up in search engines?

A little bit of both. I have multiple websites. Most often, I chose a keyword so that it is more easily searchable and so people know what they are getting when they see it. But then I also try to make it catchy and memorable. I'm fond of alliteration for some reason.

I don't have my own website yet but I never thought about how important is to pick the right name. I always see people trying to come up with a catchy, trendy name.

It's very important to have the right name. Like Melos said, it should be memorable. It should also desribe what kind of store or product it sells. There's nothing like going to a store and thinking it's one thing because of the name, and finding something completely different. This can also skew your click through results if you have sponsored links out there.

I have a few and they all vary. My portflio I took the name of my graphics work "company" and abbreviated it. On the others I usually throw a keword in the domain so you get an idea where you are headed when you go to the website.

Yeah people can remember catchy and similar phrases. Catchy phrases stay in your head longer.

I have always been reluctant to enter businesses that have names that really don't give the consumer an idea of what the business selling. Explain about how it skew your click through results.

Thanks for sharing this information. I see that memorable and keywords seem to be some of the most important points to picking a domain.

It can skew your results if someone searches for something specific, for example, new age, and comes up with a search result for a store called the Crystal Castle. They are really looking for new age merchandise, but instead, when they visit the Crystal Castle, they find out that the store actually sells soda (or whatever). The click will show on your stats, but actually has nothing to do with what the customer wanted. So you may get a lot of what appears to be browsing traffic, but is really people hitting the website, seeing what it really is, and leaving immediately. They aren't valid results of the marketability of the website because it isn't what the consumer was actually looking for.

Unless you have some type of famous name that I person can search for, it is best to have a name pertaining to what you are offering.
