Default Tables & CSS vs. Pure CSS

Which do you recommend? Tables with css for images, text, and to define the tables, or pure css for the entire layout?

I've checked Microsoft's source code and it's made with tables. I wonder why they would do that when css is becoming increasingly powerful and popular.

Microsoft is a leading company in terms of technology, so why would they implement the use of tables, which is quite old and was never designed for the way it is used?

CSS is used for layouts and alignment.

Tables are used to display tabular data.

That's the end of it.

I usually set my divs out using CSS and then fill them and display text and images using tables. It's a lot less trouble than doing everything in CSS...

It depends. I'm 100% for doing pure CSS layouts, however if I'm in a rush to show something I'll do tables/css.

I find myself falling back on a combination of CSS for basic stuff and then tables for the rest most of the time. Whenever I try to do pure CSS, I usually mess something up and then spend hours trying to fix it.

I need to spend some more time with CSS to learn how to do more advanced layouts with it. Does anyone know a good tutorial site?

Thanks, Mike, that looks like a good site. Has tons of tutorials (or links to them) on all kinds of topics. Hopefully I can find something that suits my level of experience (which is pretty low at this point with CSS).

You're very welcome, Josie. Pixel2Life actually ranks the tutorials in terms of difficulty. Just look for the cubes below the description of the tutorial.

Thanks for that link I'm working on re-doing one of my larger sites as a pure CSS layout at the moment, and just can't quite get it right.

I'll probably still use tables for some of the lists, haven't decided yet. Anything will be an improvement on the existing mess though.
