Default How would you handle

How would you handle a situation like this? You hire someone to do a job for you. They are unable to complete the job. They were ill and spent time in the hospital. They are kind enough to send you documentaion of this so that you know it was not an excuse. They complete 3/4 of the job but return to you all the money you prepaid (like for 50%).. They tell you to pay them what you think is fair. Would you be willing to pay them something?

Are you absolutely sure that they completed 3/4 of the work and did it with minimum errors? If so, I would certainly pay them something providing you can hire someone else who can jump in where they left off.

I would have to say that I would carefully consider their situation and if at all possible try to still come up with a fair payment as long as the project could still be completed if I hire someone new for the rest of whatever needs to be finished.

Same question here. How would you gauge the amount of work finished? Besides, if it is unfinished, it means there was no debugging done on the project yet. This can be very questionable if the **** of project has programming side.

It will be different if the project is only web graphics. If you decide to pay him, I think you need to wait for the project to be finished before you send any payment.

If the work they did was good, I would see how much it will cost to pay someone else to finish the project and send the original worker the balance. Say you had a budget of $100 and the next person you hire charges $75 for the completion, I would send the original worker $25 with a note explaining how you reached the amount.

Actually I think that does sound like a pretty fair idea. That way they still get some money for their time since their health problems was unavoidable.

I was going to suggest the same thing, Calypso. That also gives you the input of another professional -- the next person you hire.
