I´m about to buy an online business and would like to get in touch with a company or somebody that can do an audit or due diligence of the website and the company behind it.

Do you know where i can find people for this?

I don't know of any such service.

You can do a "whois" search on the domain name to see who is the registered owner.

You can ask the owner for quality references that you can verify as being neutral.

Unless the business has assets and is somewhat large you're going to have a hard time verifying anything. I would ask for references (people you could actually call not just email addresses). I would also ask for logs and proof of traffic. Any documentation so you know what you're getting into.

I'm not sure where you can find somebody to do what your looking for... but here is some advice to take to the closing table:

a. Make sure all records and statistic reports (aka, traffic and sales or whatever could show the business has stability potential) are all accurate and up-to-date

b. Have a contract drawn up outlining the deal, the final cost, the transfer-of-ownership, etc.

c. Lastly, have a lawyer present... common sense would tell you this. You don't necessarily need the lawyer there but make sure you have somebody around this field to review documentations and such... you don't want to buy a site and then realize "hey... wut the... I didn't see the part of the contract that they still have 25% of the business... AND OMG... they get NO SALES!!!!!"

So be careful with buying the business and review EVERYTHING that shows the business has potential and is what the seller says they are.

P.S. Sorry for the sarcasm in C... proving my point, but that WOULD be terrible if such a thing occured :tongue:

Thanks for the tips. I know alot about what i should know when buying an online business, but what i´m looking for is a professional who have been through this kind of buying process atlest a dussins times.

Maybe contact the seller to request the accounting info. ( statements, year -end etc,) from them. Next, see who is doing the accounting for the business. ( accountant or business owner ) This may give you a feel of whether to do this or not. You do want to see the paper work that is submitted to the government for tax purposes. It should have the sales and expenses etc , governing this business. Maybe contact a professional accountant to review the info. and seek a lawyer for legal purposes. These professionals should know more about all this and if not, they may refer you to the correct people regarding your concerns. Just my two cents.

If you are willing to pay people to do that, you can search for audit companies from the place where the company is located. Or, you can visit the company yourself with an auditor you trust and check the real status of the company.
