Along with what ed said, depending on the website there are probably copyrights on the image(s) prohibiting doing such without consent from the owner.
I wanted to promote a wide variety of products and I wanted to have an image for each product. It's basically a resource site for the product types. It will list the item along with an image. The user can click on the picture to goto the main site of the producer. I'm not hotlinking btw...
1. Take a picture of a BMW yourself to be sure that no one would claim it.
2. Check out SXC.hu (a free stock photography site) and see if they have anything.
It's best not to hotlink an image, because you're using someone else's bandwidth resources and costing them money. That being said, it's a very common practice and many webmasters do it.
^^ Yeah, that is terrible to hotlink though. Like I said, either free stock photo site or a paid one (my choice, fotolia.com --- $1 a credit and many of the image or 2 or 3 credits, basically $3 each.)
Try to find stock images. But like everyone else says, if you're going to use someone else's picture, usually its accepted whenever it's a huge corporation where their products are everywhere anyways - however, it's frowned upon.
