Default Online Business steps

Though many here are aware and know the basics of online business, I feel we can still have a discussion on the basic steps ncessary to start an Online business. To start with the first thing required is a Trade license from competent authority (as per the rules of the relevant country).

In the USA, most people who start an online business probably don't have a license of any kind. It is, however, a good idea.

The average "first things" list usually includes:
- a business idea
- a domain name
- hosting for that domain name
- a web site to put on the web at that domain name

I would definitely suggest protecting your idea too. If you have worked hard to come up with a logo and a name for your company, you may want to consider submitting for a trademark to protect it also. Normally you also have to register your business in the area you live in and get the appropriate certifications.

Good points, SeeMe. My dad started a printing business about 8-10 years ago, and when he went to register his business, his chosen name was already taken. Registering your business will help with that, also.

It's always good to make sure you do that before you print any letterhead or business cards too. I had a friend that just printed up her business cards, and when we asked her if she had registered her business, she looked shocked. When she went to check with the state, her name was already in use by someone else, and she could have been sued for using. She had no idea she even had to check, or any notion that someone else might have had the same idea!

SeeMe has raised an important issue. Yes if it is an unique business idea then it will be better if we trademark it and protect it. On domain registration I think it will be better to reserve the domain name as soon as the name is finalized.

Theft of logos and artwork is common place. Most do not protect them by trademarking. It is a common mistake made that cause problems down the line.

I think these are very good points if you intend to operate a sizable business or do business under a company name. I say I run about 6 businesses, but I am really only doing business under my own name at this point.

As long as you follow the laws of your country, state, and municipality, you'll be fine.

We have a fairly small business, but we have all of logos and artwork trademarked and our business is registered (per law). We are looking to grow, so we want to do it right from the beginning. You don't want to get business using one name, then when you grow large enough, be sued because you are using someone else's name or logo.

So overall we can come to a conclusion that protecting logos, artworks, name and the business concept should be taken up with utmost importance. Thanks for your suggestions.
