Default state registration

If I am having an online business only, do I still have to register with the state?

I think it will depend on your profit. If you make more than $600 (I believe), I believe you are required to; but I have no source for that and you might want to do a Google search for your state's laws.

I finally got a hold of some people with "power" (SBA) and here's the scoop. In Florida, you must register for a fictitious name if you are to do business under any name other than your own. Then you must obtain an occupational license from the county and if within specific city limits, then that one too (they can both be obtained simultaneously). Then depending on the business, you must get an EIN from the IRS. If you don't need it, it is still recommended since your social security number must be present on official paperwork, and lets face it, with all the stolen identities happening, it's just not wise.

That makes sense - if you are doing business as a store, you should be registered somewhere. Here in Arizona, you have to be licensed, but whereever your business address is is also where they tax you.

Well, come to find out my scoop was not exactly accurate. The fictitious name registration must come after the EIN which is dumb since my EIN can end up with a name taken while waiting for approval.
