| My new project Hi all, I've not been around much lately, reason being I've taken to locking myself in a room to work on my new project - "The Warmouth Project"
A couple of previous posts on here by me, one discussin zen cart and osCommerce and another asking what people are actually looking for in a shopping cart system drove me to start this project.
Warmouth (that's not its final name btw - I'm open to suggestions :P) is an open source eCommerce solution. Basically I used 4 or 5 different carts and with each one thought "I could do such a better job with this" - which is what I am doing.
Some details can be found on the website which is in my sig, but some of the features include:
Valid CSS/XHTML tableless design
Flexible templating system
Full documented API
The usual shopping cart stuff - products, categories, cross selling
The system is still in development but I'd like to take ideas, suggestions and comments etc from prospective users of the software - which is why I have launched a site to do so.
If you're interested in more info then the link is again in my sig, but I'd like to throw this thread open to NBT members to offer suggestions etc.
Thanks for reading!
Stef
P.S. I do not mean for this thread to be spam or anything like that, I just thought readers of this section may be interested in my new project. |

| Re: My new project I don't mean to knock your idea, but I mean the open source ecom system has been drilled into the ground (as you just about said). Why not just develope a commercial, targetted project within the same scope if you're going to go through all of the work? |

| Re: My new project I can't wait to see what you come up with. Hopefully it'll be free like OSCommerce since that'll be your biggest competitor. Right now, I don't have any really strong suggestions for you other then incorporating an RSS feed of some time or XML feed so that you do not need to update products yourself (might already exists, who knows). Also for the name, I'd suggest changing it. Warmouth is so...aggressive and hostile |

| Re: My new project Thanks for the comments guys,
SophMedia - Maybe its because I enjoy programming and designing, or maybe its because I myself like the free open source software idea.
Rogue - It will be free indeed. RSS/XML to update products? unsure on what you're getting at there sorry :S. As for the name, Warmouth was picked randomly as something to call the project as I developed it, I never meant for it to be any kind of public name but it seems to have stuck for now. I do plan to change it though definately. |

| Re: My new project It sounds like a very large project. I don't know if I would put that many programming hours into a project with no monetary benefit.
I do look forward to seeing it, though. There is definitely room for a free, clean, light-weight, and standard compliant eCommerce solution.

| Re: My new project Theres always room for something more flexible and friendly. Good luck with the project! When I have a bit more time I'll have a proper nose around your site - I'll be in the market for an ecommerce solution in the near future. |

| Re: My new project To give you some help in developing, check out at oDesk.com --- thats where I find my good programmers at.
Did you read my post? I remember starting a topic before this one (not saying you stole my idea... just stating) about doing one for ASP.NET --- my question is what language are you doing yours in, PHP, CGI, what?
Best of luck and keep me up to date.
ShockCart, ePremier, iShop --- just some sample names for you to use for your E-Commerce store... contact me if you want to use one, even though their open source names, I'd like to receive credit for the name if you choose one. BTW... check up on the names to make sure you don't duplicate it. |

| Re: My new project Hi Baby Boy, sorry for the late reply!
WM is being developed in PHP/MySql initially. Another developer will be taking care of the .NET version, but we dont see this being released until some time after the initial PHP version. Also on the cards is a RoR version and also support for a variety of different database platforms.
The blog on the site is a custom written mod for XMB Forum. Basically the blog is a forum on the message boards and the front page just pulls the latest post in. I considered other options, and even writing one myself but in the end it made sene to keep it together, and also shortened development time of the site so I could carry on working on the software!
Thanks a lot for the name suggestions, they will be considered If we decide to go with one of them you will of course be credited. |
