I run a small script development business selling competition scripts to game clans. The business in and of itself hasn't been particularly successful but we use a piece of software to secure our assets. PHPAudit is a licensing solution which allows you to prevent anyone from running your scripts without having the proper licensing. By placing a small piece of licensing code in your scripts that call's home at critical points in your product's execution, you can prevent anyone from running the software without having a license that allows you to legitimize every aspect of the software's usage including what server, domain, and IP address the software runs on.

I strongly recommend this solution to anyone running a script business.

Yes, it's PHP Audit. It's extremely well known and widely used. I have not personally used it but I have only heard good things.

How foolproof is it?

It depends if what you are selling is opensource or not. It is a good deterrent for most people though.
