Default Using Credit Cards online

I have started this discussion on usage of Credit Cards because I believe there are still some users who are not very confident using Credit Cards online. When we use Credit cards over the net I think the whole process is done via secure encrypting process. So there is nothing to worry about. What are your views?

I wouldn't say there is nothing to worry about. I think it depends on the merchant - which is why I am leery of going through a new merchant at first. Even if the site is encrypted for transmission of the information, you don't necessarily know how the information is stored. And you always have the possibility of the person taking the order using your information. So, no, I don't agree that there is nothing to worry about.

Which means it depends on the merchant with whom I am working. Unless the merchant is trustworthy it is not wise to use Credit Cards. Thanks for your response.

Usually I would tend to say yes, of course. It's just e-commerce has not been around for a long time and credit cards have been around for over fifty years. People do not think one thing about handing a total stranger their credit card and having him / her run off with it for a few minutes.

In a few more years, security will probably be tighter to. Smart cards will be more readily available. 128 bit encryption will be a thing of the past and people with have other methods of buying online

At least the credit card companies are starting to get more aware of the additional security needed for online transactions. For awhile, if someone got your credit card number (ex. from your stolen mail) they could make up an expiration date and shop freely online.

I think using a credit card is just fine. It's using the debit cards that can cause a night mare! At least with the credit cards (if your info is stolen or what not) you are only liable up to the first $50 dollars. And if you make a mistake, they will help you correct it. Banks (when you use a debit card) will do most of the things that the credit cards will, but incorrect charges that cause overdrafts will cost you because most banks will make you pay!

Well, debit cards do have a limit also. It's up to $500 in fraud charges that you are liable for. Unfortunately it's your money, not credit, so it can be a very expensive lesson. While credit cards are protected, you still have the hassle of finding the charge, closing your account, getting a new card...

I prefer using a "one-time use" number provided by my credit card company. Since it can only be used once, there is no problem if someone "steals" it, since it cannot be reused and it will do the thief no good at all.

This is a good option. I feel this is a great way to deal with the situation. I think they are offering Card with a restricted limit, which is also manageable.

That's a good idea. I didn't realize that credit card companies did that. Do you have to call in to get it?
