Default What do you want from a Shopping Cart?

After working with systems like Zen Cart and osCommerce it has made me wonder what features do people expect from such software, and similarly what do you expect from it? What do you think most are missing?

There are a few things that would be most important to me when selecting shopping cart services. I want a shopping cart that is going to be easy to implement as well as one that makes it easy for customers to shop and make purchases.

I want to find shopping cart software for a reasonable price, yet still offering a good value for the money. And I want a shopping card that is going to provide security for my customers and offer me the ability to accept various payment methods.

This is a great question. Here are a bullet point list of things I want from a Shopping Cart:
  1. Clean design.
  2. Ease of use. Make sure that I can clearly find what I'm looking for.
  3. Not too many steps. I hate when shopping carts have like ten steps. I don't mind scrolling vertically.
  4. I want my shopping cart secure. If it's not https then I'm not shopping there.
Those are a few thinsg that I can think of off the top of my head.

I look for something that's clean, search engine friendly, reliable, fast, doesn't take too much scrolling, is secure, and easy to use. I like a good backend too that allows it to be very customizable.

I don't have any use for a shopping cart, but from dealing with a bunch of them, I agree with what everyone has said so far.

I would add that I don't like shopping carts that don't provide the customer with a final "are you really sure you want to make this purchase" option that shows the bottom line - the cost of the product and shipping or any other associated costs. I've used some carts at some major shopping sites that send the order before telling me shipping costs or some extra charges applied, and I have never used those sites again.

Make it clear, easy (I even like it when they are marked Step 1, Step 2, etc.) enough for the technologically challenged, and always, always, SSL. I also like ones that will allow me to set up a wish list and notify me when something on my list goes on sale (as long as they don't spam me with other emails on specials, etc.).

I think most carts offer the user to back out at the last minute. Most professional carts would have this feature anyway.
Besides, if a user has gone through and paid etc, they should be pretty sure that they want to make the purchase!
