Default What would get me further in using eCommerce?

I have been pondering over why I should use eCommerce to advertise my sites products. Since we have a nice one already that isnt PHP oriented were its just updated by myself whenever we get another product. Why should I go to eCommerce is my question.

What are you currently using? eCommerce is just the general term for selling your products on the internet - I think you meant to say OScommerce?

The benefits for OScommerce are countless - it allows for flexibility, customization, and variation. Since it is open source you can do what you want with it -granted you find a competent coder.

OScommerce allows you to have a powerful CMS tied in so that you can add products a lot easier then doing it by hand.

I'd strongly suggest OScommerce as opposed to..zen cart or something of that matter.

I think he is talking about OSCommerce or at least some sort of CMS.

If you already have a good working cart then don't change it.
IMO OsCommerce and other packaged CMS's aren't that great anyway.

You're much better off with your customized software that you're using now.

Yep i would stay with what you have.
There are really no advantages to using oscommerce.

Its not secure. The only decent thing is that it's easy to add products, but you're current CMS probably already has this feature I would imagine.

I believe you are misunderstanding what eCommerce actually is.

If by eCommerce you mean OSCommerce, then no, you shouldn't go to it. This subject has been beat to death but in my opinion I believe there are better solutions.

I'd say just about everything others were saying. If your going to change osCommerce, change to it, and have a team of developers custom code and build it up. But if your program your using now is custom coded... I side with, stay with your custom coded software.

While I agree that custom coded software/script is the way to go, I have seen people who have had successful businesses with OScommerce. Unless you are selling technical items, the normal public won't know anything about the programming behind the shopping cart you're using.

I do believe that leaving osCommerce on your site may make your business looks bad, but also theotetically you can get graphical with it and make your osCommerce (Powered by osCommerce) text better styling.

just to show what can be done in that vein of oscommerce graphical customization,
here is an example of a basic oscommerce cart:

http://www.freshfrances.com/store/

Here is an example of a slightly modified oscommerce cart:

http://www.uncookedland.com/store.php

The point is.... you can get creative with oscommerce too. You'll certainly see some congruency in the design, but it doesn't have to be all tables and drop downs either.

I have been exploring the use of OScommerce and these examples and show the creative side which is my big thing since my side is about creativity.
